The Forest is the first chapter in Meat Boy, Super Meat Boy and Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine, also appearing as a level theme in Meat Boy (Map Pack).

It is a lush forest with grass, trees, moss, hills, and mountains. It also includes man-made and industrial elements, such as shelter in the form of cabins and sawblade constructs, partially giving it the appearance of a logging camp. Inhabitants of The Forest include squirrels and rabbits, and it is also possible that Meat Boy and Bandage Girl live in The Forest as well, given that they appear together in it often.

History

Meat Boy

The opening cutscene for Meat Boy takes place in The Forest, in which Dr. Fetus steals Bandage Girl and disappears with her.

In Meat Boy, The Forest contains 15 levels, unlocked in sets of five. Obstacles introduced in this chapter include sawblades, crumbling blocks, fire, and saw shooters.

The Forest is succeeded by The Salt Factory.

Super Meat Boy

The opening cutscene for The Forest sees Dr. Fetus punching Bandage Girl, much to Meat Boy's surprise. The camera then pans upward to the Super Meat Boy logo, prompting the player to "insert a coin."

Like most chapters in Super Meat Boy, The Forest contains 20 levels in its Light World and Dark World, including three Warp Zones and 20 Bandages to collect. After clearing 17 of the 20 Light World levels, the boss level is unlocked. Being the first chapter, the first few levels introduce the player to the mechanics of the game, namely jumping, wall-jumping, and running. Obstacles and mechanics introduced include sawblades, crumbling blocks, fire , sawblade launchers, and spinny saws.

The boss cutscene is sees Dr. Fetus igniting the forest much to Meat Boy's horror, he then gets into Lil' Slugger, and uses it to try and kill Meat Boy. After escaping Lil' Slugger until it breaks down, Dr. Fetus grabs Bandage Girl, ejects himself from Lil' Slugger, and flies away. Much to both Meat Boy's sadness and the death and injury of several squirrels in his wake, with a squirrel looking sad at Meat Boy before getting its head cut off suddenly and randomly by a spinny saw before the chapter complete results screen is shown.

The Hospital succeeds The Forest.

Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine

A fake set modelled after The Forest appears in Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine, created by Dr. Fetus in his lab. Level 1-20 features Big Slugger as a boss.

The Forest is succeeded by The Hospital.

• The 2010 soundtrack of Super Meat Boy uses a remixed version of The Forest theme from Meat Boy.
• In Super Meat Boy Forever, the Chipper Grove appears as an alternate take on The Forest.
• The Forest and The Hospital are the only chapters whose cutscene does not use the 8-bit remix of the level theme.
