Super Meat Boy Forever is a platform video game developed by Team Meat that was first released on December 23rd 2020. It is the second official game in the Super Meat Boy series, and a direct sequel to Super Meat Boy. The game sees sees Meat Boy and Bandage Girl chasing after Dr. Fetus to save their infant daughter, Nugget.
Story[]
Years after the events of Super Meat Boy, Meat Boy and Bandage Girl have had a child, Nugget, who is described as "their little bundle of joy." While the happy family is enjoying a picnic, Dr. Fetus attacks Meat Boy and Bandage Girl with a shovel and steals Nugget. When the couple wakes up and can't find Nugget, they suspect Fetus is behind the disappearance and give chase.
Meat Boy and Bandage Girl traverse various locations, some familiar and some alien, to catch Dr. Fetus, only for him to get away each time. Along their journey, they fight Fetus in his brand-new Big Slugger, many dangerous fly and mushroom enemies, and a floating telekinetic brain named Manic, eventually reaching and destroying the security system to Dr. Fetus' laboratory and storming it. With each opponent encountered, Nugget's actions suggest the means to defeat the foes.
Meanwhile, a series of woodland animals harmed by Fetus' deforestation slowly follow the duo to get revenge on Fetus. Lead by an injured squirrel, they drag the disabled Big Slugger along until recruiting the disgraced Manic, who powers the Slugger back on for their use.
After fighting through Dr. Fetus' lab, Meat Boy and Bandage Girl end up in his throne room. The two face off against Fetus and his many clones until the real Fetus is defeated. Before he can be further apprehended, the forest animals break into the throne room with Big Slugger and begin to attack. Fetus, unamused, presses a button that makes the Slugger self-destruct, burning and severely injuring the woodland critters and even killing Manic.
The violent scene causes Nugget to cry, which distracts Dr. Fetus from realizing the leader squirrel is reaching for the large red button on his throne. Assuming it's a self-destruct button for the lab, the squirrel tries to press it. Dr. Fetus attempts to stop him, only for the squirrel to give him the finger and die on top of the button. The button pressed, however, has a much more catastrophic effect; heavily fracturing time itself. This destroys time and the world, which causes Meat Boy and Bandage Girl to age rapidly (into Meat Ninja and Bandage Ripper respectively) and Nugget and Dr. Fetus to disappear.
The aged Meat Ninja and Bandage Ripper end up in a heavily fragmented world, and continue running through their warped reality in order to find Nugget. They end up finding a mirage of her and Dr. Fetus, which turns into atoms that reveal Fetus; he has transformed into Omega Alpha, a godlike being with immense power and the ability to manipulate the cosmos. The duo fight Omega Alpha, which causes a series of atoms to coagulate into Nugget. The duo reunite with and embrace their daughter, only for Omega Alpha to recover and try to crush the three with a large rock.
With her parents struggling to hold up the rock, Nugget gets the idea to offer her pacifier to Fetus, which soothes him and returns him to his normal form. He goes to embrace Nugget for being the first person to be kind to him, only for Meat Ninja and Bandage Ripper to hit him so hard it resets the effects of the fractured timeline and destroys his jar. Time has been reset to before the animals invaded the lab to attack Fetus; they arrive like before, but notice the incapacitated Fetus. They see the mission as complete, with the leader squirrel saluting Meat Boy and Bandage Girl before riding off in Big Slugger. The reunited family also starts to leave, but are interrupted by Dr. Fetus throwing a tantrum. The ignore him and continue talking; Fetus notices the offered pacifier in his hand, calming him once more. Nugget waves goodbye to him, and he waves back.
In a series of mid-credit images, it's shown that Meat Boy, Bandage Girl, and Nugget adventured back through all the worlds they went through before on their way home. It's also shown that the woodland animals and Manic are restoring the forest, even letting Big Slugger be reclaimed by nature. In a post-credits scene, Meat Boy, Bandage Girl, and Nugget finally get to have their picnic, uninterrupted by Dr. Fetus. Meanwhile, in a hidden underground facility, Fetus uses data from the adventure to create multiple clones of Meat Boy using a machine. He then cocks a plasma shotgun and prepares to kill them all.
DR. FETUS WILL RETURN
Gameplay[]
Super Meat Boy Forever contains similar difficult precision platforming to its predecessor, Super Meat Boy, but with a new control scheme: The player character automatically runs, basing the player's control around midair movement and direction manipulation. Normal gameplay only uses two buttons: A button to jump and punch, and a button to dive and slide. These four actions can be chained into one-another to perform precise, quick movement through a level, all while punching through enemies and around hazards.

Development[]
After development of Mew-Genics at Team Meat halted, Tommy Refenes and Edmund McMillen began work on an auto-running, mobile successor to Super Meat Boy, titled Super Meat Boy Forever. The game was revealed in 2014, but development would quietly stop shortly after; McMillen left Team Meat some time after this work on other projects, including The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.
In late 2016-early 2017, Tommy Refenes would restart development, increasing the scope of the game to be a fully-fledged sequel that would be released on consoles and PC as well as mobile. Lala Fuchs was hired to direct the art for the game, and a team of animators was brought on as well to make high-quality cutscenes and in-game animations.
New additions were brought into this new version of the game, including a generative level system and new story elements. The latter point in particular saw the introduction of Nugget, who was created because Refenes was in the process of having his first son.
The game was revealed at PAX West 2017 to a mostly positive response, albeit with backlash from various fans who disliked the new auto-running gameplay. The game was reported to release in 2018, and continued to appear at various gaming events, as well as having a spot at Awesome Games Done Quick via a partnership with Team Meat for multiple years.
In December of 2018, the game received its first official trailer, which also announced its delay to April of 2019. The game would delayed again on April 4th, 2019. After further development and delays, the game was announced to be released on December 23rd, 2020 at The Game Awards.
Ports[]
Super Meat Boy Forever was first announced to release on PC (via Steam), Xbox One, PlayStation 4, mobile (via iOS, and Android) in 2017. However, the game's initial launch only saw versions for PC (via Epic Games Launcher) and Nintendo Switch in order to release the game before the end of 2020. Ports for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were released on April 16, 2021.
Trivia[]
- The events of Super Meat Boy Forever's post-credits scene would later be expanded upon with Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine, which started development after the game's initial launch.
