Super Meat Boy is an indie video game series developed and published primarily by Team Meat. It stars Meat Boy, a skinned human, typically as he rescues one of his loved ones from the evil Dr. Fetus. The series is well-known for its difficulty, most notably in platforming, and having simple controls that are hard to master.
Starting with a Flash prototype, the series made its official, commercial debut with Super Meat Boy in 2010. Since then, a few more games have released, including a tabletop game and a few smaller projects.
History[]
Meat Boy[]
In 2008, Edmund McMillen and Jonathan McEntee began work on a Flash game for Newgrounds involving a skinless hero. Originally called Meat Ninja, the hero was changed to Meat Boy to be distinguishable from The Ninja from N, another Flash game.
After three months of development, Meat Boy released on Newgrounds on October 5, 2008. The game was well-liked by Newgrounds users; many comments were made on its difficulty and controls.
A standalone Map Pack expansion for the game was released on December 8, 2008, featuring levels made by fans in the game's Level Creator.
Super Meat Boy[]
After release of Meat Boy, Edmund McMillen was contacted by both Nintendo and Microsoft to make a game for their downloadable services: WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade respectively.
Super Meat Boy Forever[]
Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes began working on a new Super Meat Boy project in 2014: An auto-running mobile spinoff. At some point in 2014, development quietly halted, and Edmund McMillen left Team Meat to pursue new goals.
Refenes would revive the project at the very end of 2016, without McMillen's involvement, and increased the scope to be a fully-fledged sequel to Super Meat Boy to release on consoles and PC. A new artist and multiple animators were hired to define an art style and create cutscenes with a higher production value. Expanded gameplay and story elements were also added.
The game was announced as Super Meat Boy Forever in August 2017, and was set for a 2018 release date. The game would be delayed to April 2019, then 2019, then 2020 before finally being launched on December 23, 2020 to mixed to positive reception.
