Ranks are a mechanic that appears all entries of the Super Meat Boy series. They are special, lettered markings that indicate completing levels in a certain ways. In some games, ranks can unlock certain features.
Overview[]
Meat Boy (+ Map Pack)[]
In Meat Boy and its Map Pack expansion, an A+ rank is received on a level once it is completed. The marking is purely visual.
Super Meat Boy[]
In Super Meat Boy, an A+ rank can be obtained on any main level by completing it within its pre-set par time. Getting an A+ rank on a Light World level will unlock its Dark World variant.
Super Meat Boy Forever[]
In Super Meat Boy Forever, an A+ rank can be obtained on any main level by completing it within the par time. Much like the previous game, getting an A+ rank on a Light World level unlocks its Dark World variant.
New to Super Meat Boy Forever are S ranks: If the player gets an A+ time in a level without dying, they instead get an S rank. Additionally, the player can achieve an S rank by both getting an A+ rank and beating the same level without dying regardless of time in two playthroughs of a level. S ranks can also unlock Dark World levels.
Getting an S rank on all Light World and Dark World levels are one of the two requirements to unlock Squirrel and Relationship Goals respectively.
In the main game, dying resets the player's time to what it was when they reached the most recent chunk. In Meat Grinder, however, time is cumulative over all deaths in a level.
Super Meat Boy 3D[]
In Super Meat Boy 3D, an A+ rank can be obtained on any level by completing it within its pre-set par time.
Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine[]
In Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine, an A+ rank can be obtained by completing a level within its pre-set par time. Unlike the main series, ranks do not unlock anything in-game, only serving to unlock achievements. Like in Meat Grinder, time persists between fails.
