Race Mode as it appears on Steam.
Race Mode is an additional game mode available in the Nintendo Switch and Steam versions of Super Meat Boy. It first became available built-in to the Nintendo Switch version on its launch on January 11, 2018, and later released for the PC version as paid DLC on October 24, 2018.
It features local, split-screen multiplayer gameplay in which two players race through a set of levels.
History[]
Prior to the release of Super Meat Boy, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes wanted to implement some kind of multiplayer mode. Prototypes were made, but ultimately, the final release of the game was solely single-player. When porting Super Meat Boy to the Nintendo Switch in 2017, Tommy Refenes decided he wanted to see a new multiplayer mode developed for the port. This mode would be called Race Mode, and was developed by Blitworks while working on the port.
After the launch of the Nintendo Switch version of Super Meat Boy, Refenes wanted to see Race Mode come to the PC version; he also wanted to include the ability to play races with Super Meat World levels.
Gameplay[]
Setup[]
When Race Mode is first selected, players can choose between Normal Mode or Random Mode. Normal Mode gives the player a selection of levels from chapters they have unlocked, as well as a selection between Light World or Dark World, with the ability to play both sets of levels. There is also the ability to play through all levels.
Exclusive to the PC version is the ability to play Featured levels from Super Meat World in Normal Mode, as well as a third initial mode: The Unknown, which lets players go through random user-created levels from Super Meat World.
Race[]
Once the race starts, the two players will compete against eachother by going through the levels. Levels can be skipped by using 2 bandages; both players start out with six, but can collect more from the levels that have them normally. Players can switch to any character available on the pause screen's character select at any time (including locked characters) unless playing custom levels on the PC version.
The first player to complete all the levels wins.
