Keys are a recurring objects that first appear in Super Meat Boy. In all appearances, they are metallic keys used to unlock lock blocks in order for Meat Boy to progress through a level.
History[]
Super Meat Boy[]
Keys debut in Super Meat Boy, along with lock blocks. Upon collecting a key, it will disappear, and a set of connected lock blocks will also disappear one-by-one. They are gray in appearance, except in Hell, where they are a rustic brown.
Super Meat Boy Forever[]
Keys return in Super Meat Boy Forever. In this game, keys will not instantly unlock lock blocks. Once collected, any keys will follow the player character; multiple can be carried at once. When the player is near a lock block, all lock blocks and key blocks connected to it will be unlocked and disappear in an order depending on distance from the unlocked lock block. This uses up one carried key.
Keys are now golden in appearance.
Trivia[]
- The sound effect for collecting a key was sampled for grabbing a key in The Binding of Isaac, and remixed in Rebirth.
- An unused object in Hell with a key in appearance will kill the player. It was suggested that maybe this trap obstacle was considered for the game at one point. A test level with this object can be loaded with the name "Assy".
Glitches[]
- Keys can unlock individual Switch Blocks, without starting a chain. If a Lock Block is surrounding it though, it will function like normal.
- Having more than 6 keys will cause all keys after to float without the use of waypoints.
- Crumbling Block directly below keys will always dissipate, regardless of vertical positioning.
