Image that briefly explains what a dark world is.

The Dark World is a mechanic that appears in Super Meat Boy and Super Meat Boy Forever. It features harder versions of the normal levels (which are labeled as Light World levels).

In both games, a Dark World level is unlocked by receiving an A+ rank on its respective Light World level. Dark World levels are signified with an X (i.e. 1-1X for the Dark World variant of 1-1), are harder than their Light World counterparts, and usually have different music.

History[]

Super Meat Boy[]

Every Light World level has a Dark World variant, with the exception of most boss levels, glitch levels, and Warp Zones. In each of the first five chapters, the Dark World contains nine out of the chapter's twenty bandages, and a single unique Warp Zone.

The only boss level in the Dark World is Dr. Fetus, which requires completing 85 other Dark World levels to play.

Super Meat Boy Forever[]

The Dark World levels in Super Meat Boy Forever are unlocked in the same way to its predecessor. Most chunks have harder, Dark World alternates that are often used in conjunction with their normal variants in the Light World. Pacifiers may appear in the Dark World, but only if the amount in the Dark World and Light World add up to six per chapter (totaling 30 per world generation) No boss levels have Dark World variants.

0xDEADBEEF's Dark World levels are in the game's files, but are only playable via Meat Grinder through both Quick Game and certain days of The Daily Grind.

Trivia[]

  • The terms Light World and Dark World are most likely a reference to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in which Link traverses between two worlds of the same names.
    • The Dark World in Link to the Past is desolate, much like the levels in Super Meat Boy's Dark World, strengthening the allusion.
